Summary: This special topic poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. This survey, fielded January 27, 2000, is a call-back of the January 21-23, 2000, cohort from CBS NEWS STATE OF THE UNION POLL, JANUARY 2000 (ICPSR 2920), and was conducted to assess respondent views following President Bill Clinton's State of the Union address delivered earlier that evening. Respondents were asked which of the following Clinton proposals they would like to see happen in the coming year: raise the minimum wage, pass additional gun control laws, pass a patient's bill of rights, provide prescription drug coverage for Medicare patients, and cut taxes. Respondents were also asked for their opinions of Clinton and his handling of the presidency, as well as their opinions of Vice President Al Gore, and whether Clinton and Congress would work together in the coming year. An additional question elicited respondents' views regarding Clinton's claim that the government's $3.6 trillion federal debt could be paid off by the year 2013. Background information on respondents includes age, gender, political party, political orientation, voter registration and participation history, race, Hispanic origin, and marital status
